Emergency pharmacy courier: receive medication quickly and safely

Apotheken-Notdienst per Kurier

Do you urgently need medication but cannot get to the pharmacy yourself? On request, DAGO Express collects prepared orders directly from an open pharmacy or out-of-hours pharmacy and delivers them to you. Our medical courier service is available around the clock – including nights, weekends and public holidays. The pharmacy must be permitted to dispense the medicine, have it in stock and agree to hand it over to the courier.

Important: In a life-threatening emergency, call the emergency services immediately on 112.

Key information at a glance

  • DAGO Express organises time-critical direct journeys between the pharmacy and the recipient.
  • Collections are possible in Germany and many other European regions.
  • A suitable vehicle can often be ready to collect within 60 to 120 minutes.
  • E-prescriptions, prescription checks and pharmaceutical advice are arranged directly with the pharmacy.
  • Availability and the transport price can be checked online before booking.

What does the DAGO Express emergency pharmacy courier do?

DAGO Express is the logistics partner for fast collection and direct delivery of prepared medication. We do not replace a doctor or pharmacy. The pharmacy remains responsible for pharmaceutical checks, advice and dispensing the medicine.

For example, our courier can collect an order that has already been placed with a community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy or out-of-hours pharmacy. The courier then travels directly to the stated delivery address without scheduled transshipment.

The service is suitable for private individuals, pharmacies, GP practices, care facilities, hospitals and businesses. Depending on the order, we can transport individual packs of medicine as well as medical aids, healthcare products or larger pharmaceutical consignments.

DAGO Express provides the courier service 24/7 in principle. Whether a specific job can be accepted immediately depends on vehicle availability, location and the medicine’s requirements. For time-critical orders, availability should therefore be checked first.

When is a medication courier useful?

An emergency pharmacy courier helps when urgently needed medicine is available but cannot be collected in person. There may be many reasons for this.

Typical situations include:

  • A parent cannot leave a sick child alone.
  • A patient is not mobile after an operation.
  • An older person cannot reach the out-of-hours pharmacy.
  • Urgently needed medicine has been reserved at a pharmacy farther away.
  • Important medication is missing after discharge from hospital.
  • A care facility urgently needs a prepared product.
  • A GP practice or hospital needs medication or medical products transported urgently.
  • A pharmacy wants an urgent patient order delivered by an external courier.

DAGO Express can also organise a direct journey at night, at weekends and on public holidays. However, the selected out-of-hours pharmacy must be open, have the medicine in stock and agree to hand it over to the appointed courier.

You can find an open pharmacy in Germany through the official aponet.de emergency pharmacy search.

Three steps to the medication you need

How does the DAGO Express emergency pharmacy courier work? Reserve the medicine with a pharmacy, calculate the courier price and then send DAGO Express the collection and delivery details. A courier collects the prepared order and takes it directly to the recipient.

Contact the pharmacy and reserve the medicine

First call the selected pharmacy. Ask them to confirm that the required medicine is actually in stock. Also clarify whether your prescription can be redeemed and whether the pharmacy will hand the order to an appointed courier.

Where possible, confirm the following before booking:

  • Name and strength of the medicine
  • Pack size and dosage form
  • Type of prescription
  • Statutory co-payment or purchase price
  • Payment method
  • Any advice required
  • Handover requirements
  • Refrigeration or other transport requirements

An out-of-hours pharmacy is not automatically obliged to arrange an external courier. DAGO Express can provide the transport once the pharmacy has properly prepared and released the order.

Book the courier journey with DAGO Express

Enter the pharmacy’s collection address and the required delivery address in the online price calculator. Add all information relevant to the journey.

This includes in particular:

  • Name and address of the pharmacy
  • Name of the contact person
  • Opening or collection time
  • Recipient’s name
  • Full delivery address
  • A telephone number that can be reached
  • Size and number of packages
  • Requested collection or delivery time
  • Special transport requirements

The price is calculated from the distance, required vehicle, time of day and any additional services. Private customers generally pay for the courier journey in advance. Payment methods offered on the website include credit card, PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay and other online payment options.

Separate payment terms and payment by invoice can be agreed for business customers following a credit check.

Track collection and direct delivery

After confirmation, the courier drives to the specified pharmacy. In Germany and many European regions, DAGO Express can often collect consignments within 60 to 120 minutes. This is the possible dispatch time until collection, not the total delivery time.

After collection, the consignment is transported to the recipient without scheduled transshipment. This dedicated direct courier journey’s duration depends on distance, traffic and the agreed requirements.

You can follow the transport through real-time tracking. The tracking link can also be shared with the recipient if required. This lets everyone involved see where the driver is and approximately when the delivery will arrive.

Redeeming an e-prescription with a DAGO Express courier

The courier does not issue or medically assess an e-prescription. It must be retrieved and supplied by the pharmacy. The simplest option is to send the prescription digitally to the selected pharmacy before booking the courier.

Possible methods include:

  • Gematik’s e-prescription app
  • The pharmacy’s app or ordering system
  • A CardLink process offered by the pharmacy
  • Prescription code or QR code
  • A printout from the GP practice

Using the e-prescription app, insured patients can select a pharmacy and assign the prescription digitally. If the pharmacy does not offer its own delivery service, you can arrange for DAGO Express to collect the completed order.

The electronic health card alone is usually not the most practical option for an external courier order because it is normally read at the pharmacy. Send the e-prescription digitally in advance where possible or agree another solution directly with the pharmacy.

Having a paper prescription transported by courier

For a conventional paper prescription, the pharmacy usually requires the original. A photograph may be used for an initial check by prior arrangement, but generally does not replace the original for final dispensing.

If the pharmacy has not yet received the paper prescription, an additional journey may be needed:

  1. DAGO Express collects the original prescription from the patient or GP practice.
  2. The courier takes the prescription to the agreed pharmacy.
  3. The pharmacy checks and processes the prescription.
  4. The courier collects the prepared medication.
  5. The order is transported directly to the patient.

Alternatively, the pharmacy can agree the prescription collection and later return journey with the courier service in advance. As this increases the work and distance involved, describe the whole process when booking.

Additional rules apply to narcotic prescriptions, T-prescriptions and other special prescriptions. The dispensing pharmacy decides whether collection and delivery are permitted. DAGO Express only transports the consignment after the pharmacy has approved it.

Having over-the-counter medicine delivered

DAGO Express can also collect over-the-counter medicines and healthcare products. Where possible, order and pay for the required product with the pharmacy in advance.

When ordering, state the exact:

  • Product name
  • Active-ingredient strength
  • Pack size
  • Dosage form
  • Quantity required

Otherwise, products with similar names may be confused. The driver should not select the medicine. If you are unsure, ask the pharmacy for advice by telephone.

This is particularly important for medicines for children, pregnant women, people with chronic conditions or patients already taking other products. Over-the-counter medicines can also cause side effects and interactions.

Does DAGO Express deliver at night and at weekends?

DAGO Express offers a 24/7 direct courier service. Requests can therefore also be made at night, at weekends and on public holidays. Before accepting the order, we check whether a suitable vehicle is available.

Several conditions must be met for a successful night delivery:

  • An out-of-hours pharmacy is accessible.
  • The medicine is in stock there.
  • The prescription and payment have been clarified.
  • The pharmacy agrees to hand the order to the courier.
  • A suitable vehicle is available.
  • The recipient can accept the delivery in person.

An out-of-hours pharmacy is not automatically required to provide its own delivery service. DAGO Express can bridge precisely this logistics gap between pharmacy and patient.

How quickly is the medication delivered?

DAGO Express can often provide a vehicle for collection within 60 to 120 minutes after the booking is confirmed. The actual time depends on the collection location, time of day and vehicle availability.

The subsequent journey time depends on the distance between the pharmacy and the recipient. A total delivery time of 60 or 90 minutes therefore cannot be guaranteed for every order.

Delivery may take longer if:

  • The prescription first has to be collected.
  • The pharmacy still has to prepare the medicine.
  • There are pharmaceutical queries.
  • The doctor must be contacted.
  • Another pharmacy must be visited.
  • Special transport conditions are required.
  • Traffic or weather affects the journey.

Always reserve the medicine before booking the courier. Tell DAGO Express when the order will actually be ready for collection.

How much does an emergency pharmacy courier cost?

The price of a DAGO Express direct journey is calculated individually. It depends in particular on distance, selected vehicle, requested collection time and any additional requirements.

Total costs may consist of several items:

Cost itemPayee
Courier or direct journeyDAGO Express
Price of the medicinePharmacy
Statutory co-paymentPharmacy
Out-of-hours feePharmacy
Possible additional journey for a paper prescriptionDAGO Express
Special transport servicesDAGO Express

For a German statutory prescription, the co-payment for adults is generally ten per cent of the medicine’s price. It is at least five and at most ten euros, but cannot exceed the actual price of the medicine. Minors and people exempt from co-payments may be excluded.

In Germany, pharmacies may generally charge an out-of-hours fee of €2.50 when used between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., on Sundays and public holidays, and after 2 p.m. on 24 December. This pharmacy fee is separate from the courier price.

You can calculate the transport price before booking with the DAGO Express price calculator. This shows the cost of the direct journey before you place the order.

Safety during medication transport

Medicines are sensitive goods. The pharmacy must therefore state the requirements that apply during transport. These may include a specific temperature range, protection from light or personal handover.

DAGO Express provides direct transport without scheduled reloading. The consignment therefore remains in the vehicle used throughout the journey in principle, reducing additional interfaces and avoiding unnecessary stays in parcel hubs.

Temperature-controlled transport may require a suitable vehicle and a record of the temperature profile. These requirements must be stated in the enquiry. A standard courier journey is not automatically a qualified refrigerated transport.

For safe handling, state the following when booking:

  • Required temperature range
  • Size and weight of the consignment
  • Particular sensitivity
  • Value of goods
  • Requested identity check
  • Personal handover
  • Documentation requirements
  • Telephone numbers for the pharmacy and recipient

The pharmacy is responsible for packing and properly releasing the medicine. DAGO Express accepts the consignment in the agreed form and transports it to the named recipient.

Data protection for prescriptions and health information

Prescriptions and medication orders can contain sensitive health information. Only send details that are genuinely needed for collection and delivery.

Where possible, send the full prescription directly to the pharmacy. In many cases the courier journey only requires:

  • Collection address
  • Collection number or order reference
  • Name of the person collecting
  • Delivery address
  • Recipient’s name
  • Telephone number
  • Handover instructions

Do not send prescription photographs or e-prescription codes to the driver without being asked. Agree a secure transmission method with the pharmacy. DAGO Express does not need a diagnosis unless it is relevant to the transport.

What happens if the medicine is not in stock?

Always have stock checked before booking the courier. If the medicine is unavailable, the pharmacy may be able to name another open pharmacy or assess an approved alternative.

By prior arrangement, DAGO Express can also visit another pharmacy. However, this changes the distance, delivery time and price. The courier must not decide to take a different product.

Only the pharmacy can approve a substitution under the applicable pharmaceutical and legal requirements. If necessary, it will contact the prescribing doctor.

Medication transport for pharmacies, doctors and hospitals

DAGO Express does not only provide individual deliveries for private customers. Pharmacies, GP practices, care facilities, medical centres and hospitals can also use the courier service for time-critical transport.

Possible assignments include:

  • Delivery to patients with limited mobility
  • Transport between pharmacies
  • Supplying care facilities
  • Urgent delivery after discharge from hospital
  • Transport of medical aids
  • Direct journey to a GP practice or hospital
  • Scheduled same-day delivery
  • Temperature-controlled direct transport
  • Regular routes and customised transport concepts

Fixed processes, contacts and collection times can be agreed for recurring consignments. Business customers with higher shipping volumes can request a bespoke transport concept.

Pharmacy courier after discharge from hospital

After an unexpected discharge from hospital, patients sometimes need medicine that is not yet available at home. At the same time, the patient may be unable to travel to a pharmacy.

Send the discharge prescription to an accessible pharmacy early. Ask it to confirm that every product is in stock and when the order can be collected. DAGO Express can then be booked for the direct journey from the pharmacy to the home or care facility.

For planned discharge, organise the transport in advance where possible. Rare medicines may not be available immediately, and the pharmacy may need to ask questions about the prescription or further medication.

When is DAGO Express not the right service?

DAGO Express is a courier and logistics provider. Our drivers do not make diagnoses, recommend doses or replace pharmaceutical advice.

In a life-threatening emergency, call 112 immediately. Examples include:

  • Severe difficulty breathing
  • Unconsciousness
  • Signs of paralysis
  • Severe chest pain
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Persistent seizures
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Acute signs of poisoning

If you need medical assistance outside surgery hours in Germany but there is no immediate danger to life, contact the medical on-call service on 116117.

Frequently asked questions about the DAGO pharmacy courier
