What is a freight forwarder?

The term “freight forwarder” refers to a service company that organizes the transportation of goods on behalf of its customers. A freight forwarder plans and coordinates shipments, selects suitable transport modes such as trucks, ships, trains, or airplanes, and ensures timely delivery. In Germany, forwarding companies usually operate under the German Freight Forwarders’ Standard Terms and Conditions (ADSp), which precisely define their rights and obligations. Today, many freight forwarders also act as logistics service providers, taking on tasks such as warehousing, packaging, and customs clearance.
