Transshipment: Definition and Examples

What does transshipment mean in logistics?

The term transshipment refers to the transfer of goods from one mode of transportation to another within the logistics process. It is one of the key operations in global supply chains, particularly relevant in intermodal transport, where different carriers such as ships, trains, and trucks are combined. For example, containers are unloaded from a vessel by crane and reloaded onto a train or truck for further inland transport. Transshipment may occur at multiple points along the logistics chain and often leads to additional handling costs and administrative effort for the shipping company. Internal transshipment can also take place within a facility, for instance when goods are moved from a conveyor belt onto a forklift.
