Euro pallet: Definition and Examples

What is a Euro pallet?

The Euro pallet is a standardized wooden pallet according to the standards of the European Pallet Association (EPAL). It is used for the safe and efficient transport of goods in international freight traffic.

Structure, dimensions, and significance of the Euro pallet

The Euro pallet, also known as the EPAL pallet, is a standard logistics size. It measures 1200 x 800 x 144 mm and is usually made of sturdy wood. It can carry loads of up to 1500 kilograms and can be picked up from four sides by forklifts or pallet trucks. Thanks to its standardization, it can be used worldwide and facilitates the exchange of transported goods.

A key feature is the so-called exchange system. Pallets with the EPAL imprint are exchangeable, which is particularly crucial in freight forwarding and warehousing. This saves companies time and money. Tracking and documentation in goods transport are also simplified.

The standardization of the Euro pallet enables smooth processes throughout the entire supply chain. Whether in a warehouse, truck, or container – the dimensions are tailored to many systems. This means they fit perfectly on loading ramps, in shelving systems, and in transport vehicles.

Due to their robustness, the Euro pallet is often used for several years. If necessary, they can be repaired if only certain parts are damaged. EPAL-certified companies undertake such repairs under strict specifications.

The Euro pallet also plays a role in recycling. When it is no longer usable, the wood is often further processed or recycled for energy. This contributes to sustainable logistics.

The Euro pallet is indispensable in retail and shipping. Many supermarkets use them directly as sales space – so-called display pallets. They are also creatively reused in the event industry and in furniture construction.

In addition to the classic version, there are also half pallets and special sizes. However, these are less frequently in circulation and not always exchangeable. The standard Euro pallet remains the central size for pallet exchange.

Typical terms used in the context of Euro pallet are: Pallet Exchange, Industrial Pallet, Load Securing and Pallet rack
