Tracking and Tracing: Definition and Examples

What is track-and-trace?

The term track-and-trace refers to the complete tracking of shipments, parcels, or loading units both within and outside a company. Its main purpose is to determine the exact location and status of goods in real time. Through modern information and communication technologies, every step along the supply chain can be transparently monitored — from dispatch to delivery. Track-and-trace systems therefore play a key role in process optimization, quality assurance, and supply chain transparency.
