Freight Shipping Explained: LTL, Full Truckload and Dedicated Express

Freight shipping covers goods that are generally moved as pallets, crates or other handling units rather than ordinary parcels. The shipper chooses not only a carrier, but also a transportation model. LTL, full truckload and dedicated express differ in how capacity is shared, how many handoffs are likely and how tightly a deadline can be planned.

LTL: share the network

Less-than-truckload (LTL) combines multiple shippers’ freight. A shipment may move through terminals and be handled more than once. It can be economical for a few pallets when transit is flexible, but extra services—liftgates, appointments, limited-access delivery—may change the final rate. Full truckload: fill or reserve the trailer

Truckload service assigns a trailer or vehicle for a particular load, whether or not it is physically filled. The shipper should still define the actual vehicle, pickup window, loading responsibility and route. A large load or a requirement for fewer transfers may favor truckload. A reserved trailer is not automatically a time-guaranteed express service; read the carrier’s appointment and transit terms.

Dedicated express: plan around the shipment

Dedicated express typically uses a vehicle assigned to an urgent shipment with a direct or tightly planned route. Compare the complete offer

Give every provider the same packed dimensions, gross weight, commodity description, origin, destination, ready time and receiving deadline. Include accessorial needs at both ends. Compare the number of handling points, transit estimate, appointment process, insurance terms, proof of delivery and exception response—not just the base rate. For a flexible pallet shipment, LTL can be the sensible baseline. When handling risk, size or a missed deadline would carry a larger business cost, compare a direct vehicle. The best freight-shipping model depends on the real shipment, not a slogan or the number of pallets alone.
