Track transportation, inspection labor, repackaging, repair, storage, and customer-service time. Compare those costs with the value actually recovered from the item. Measure the time from return request to resolution as well as the time spent in the warehouse.
Reason codes can reveal preventable problems. A pattern of wrong-size shipments, missing accessories, or damaged corners may point to product information, picking, or packaging issues. Fixing the original cause can be more valuable than making the return trip cheaper.
Tell customers when a return is approved, collected or received, and resolved. Avoid treating a carrier's delivery scan as proof that inspection or reimbursement is complete. Those are separate milestones.
